News
Richard - Our Bass player
My name is Richard Mullins and have been playing with Brass Bands around the area on and off for over 50 years. I am currently playing with Daytime Brass, a newly formed band, where I play the tuba.
I am passionate about long distance walking, which is my safety valve, and a way of dealing with my mental health issues. It’s a chance to be at one with nature with my own thoughts and I find it very soothing. A long distance walk for me is normally a minimum of 100 km (62 miles) and on a typical day I would cover 20-25 km (12 to 15 Miles). Past walks have included, Hadrian’s Wall, West Highland Way, Southwest Coast Path in its entirety (630 miles), and the Camino de Santiago, from Lugo to Santiago de Compostela (62 Miles)
This year, amongst other walks, I have signed up for the Alzheimer’s, Jurassic Coast 26. As it suggests this is a 26 miler and I know that this will be a proper challenge for me. There is much training to be done!!
I am walking as a dedication to my friend, Richard Moor, who is a sufferer. Many of you will remember Richard from his days with the Bank. Richard is 75 years old and was diagnosed with dementia in 2023, although it had been a slippery slope before then. He has been married to his wife, Pat, for 40 years and has a son and two grandchildren. They were very much looking forward to their retirement but that has been dashed.
Pat can no longer look after Richard at home, and he now lives in a specialist Dementia Care Home. The days of Golfing, meeting up with former colleagues for a walk and chat are but a distance memory. Pat does manage to take him out for a coffee or a local National Trust property, something that they enjoyed together.
The financial and emotional weight has been immense, forcing difficult decisions and significant life changes. The family goal now is to ensure Richard has the best quality of life possible while the family navigates the heartbreaking journey.
Alzheimer’s is a cruel disease. It is an emotional rollercoaster for all the family and anything that can be done to find a cure or at least prevent the symptoms at an early stage is so important.
